Less Sound = More Ground
MANDATORY NOISE TESTING FOR 2004
In 2003 we conducted a noise test as part of the technical inspection.
During 2003 the AMA and many of the states implemented a noise limit of 96 dBa for
off-road bikes. Our limit for 2003 was 99 dBa maximum. For our 2004 ride. we have reduced
the limit to 97 dBa. The tests will be conducted PRIOR to picking up your Riding Number.
You will present your bike for Sound Test and after you have tested below 98 dBa we will
place a numbered seal on your bike's exhaust and give you a "Passed" card to take to the
next inspection station. 98 dB or more is an invite to go back to the truck and work on
it! You can contact Stan Simpson if you have questions about your bike's noise level.
TEST INFORMATION
- We will use certified Type 1 and 2 sound meters that have been calibrated by a lab.
We will use the test procedure from SAE that applies to off-road motorcycles. ( SAE J
1287-1998 )
- The sound meter will be placed at a 45-degree angle rearward from the outlet of your
exhaust system and 20" away- (level with the exhaust outlet).
- The rider will stay sitting on the bike with both feet on the ground.
- The RPM will be raised to the prescribed level and held constant by the testing
engineers.
- The RPM rating will be according to the Motorcycle Industry Council's table for
off-road bikes (Updated May 9, 2003) (see table below)
- After your bike passes the 97 or less sound level (using the A scale on slow
response) we will install a seal on the silencer or insert portion of your exhaust system.
This is your approval to ride the event.
- During the week's ride we will spot-check a few of the bikes to see if the sound
level has stayed below 97! We know no one would change exhaust systems and not be able to
ride the rest of the run!
- Take a look at the Table of Bikes listed to see what RPM your bike will be tested
at when you present it. If you have an aftermarket system or the insert removed, you should
test your bike before you travel all the way to Basalt!
- Your local motorcycle dealer can help you or we can help you find a method to get
your bike tested before the event.
- Let us know if your bike is not listed in the sample table we supplied. We can
email you a copy of the MIC RPM chart if you need it.
- If you need to test your bike and can't find anyone locally, we can supply the
test equipment if you pay the UPS charges to and from your location.
- You can email us if you have questions!
The test crew for 2004 will include:
Stan Simpson - 210 861 4993
Vernon Markworth - 830 537 5248
Will Hendrix
| If you think your bike will
test over the limit we can assist you in methods to reduce the noise
level before you transport to Basalt. Send an e mail to
Stan@StanSimpson.net
and we can help walk you thru the things you can do to improve your
bikes exhaust system.
